Painted columns on Place Chacha, Ouidah’s former auction square

Places

Place Chacha

The former auction square, where the captives’ walk to the sea began.

  • Stop 1 on the Slave Route
  • Memory

The starting point of the Slave Route, Place Chacha was the auction square: captives were sold here before being led to the beach.

Its name comes from “Chacha”, the nickname of the slave trader Francisco Félix de Souza, who settled in Ouidah in the 19th century. The painted columns that stand here today invite visitors to pause before setting off.
